How We Roll in Our RV: Removing Pet Hair

How We Roll in Our RV: Removing Pet Hair 1

Yesterday it was bad pet breath, today, readers want to know how we remove pet hair from our RV.

Jennifer and I share how we clean up after our Norwegian Elkhound, Tai. It's not rocket science. Having leather seats can help. We throw a cover over them, then shake the hair out each day.

As for the throw runs and the rest of the interior of the Roadtrek we travel in, Jen uses a collapsible broom, an old fashioned whisk brook and sometimes, good old duct tape.

pet-hair-lossOne thing we purchased that we are not happy with is the portable “Dustbuster” vacuum. We've tried a couple models and found they don't hold a charge and really don't do a very good job of removing pet hair.

We've found the best tool is prevention. We brush Tai during walks. Daily brushing outside makes for much less inside shedding.

How about you? Use comments below to share how you clean up after your pet.

Owning a dog or a cat can bring a lot of joy into your life… but it can also bring a lot of sneezing, sniffling, and even trouble breathing if you’re sensitive to the dander and hair they leave around the house. You and your family shouldn’t have to go through that on a daily basis, but you also shouldn’t have to give up your four-legged companion. While there’s no way you can completely stop your pet from shedding and producing dander, there are steps you can take to improve the air quality in your home so that you don’t have to suffer for the sake of Spot or Whiskers.

  2. I have fur floating freely. I used to be OCD, so God gave me an ultra-shedder to deal with it. I use a Furminator brush and Dyson Animal handheld vac. Cleaning a 22 ft motor home is a breeze, one of the joys of tiny living.

  3. I have a Siberian Husky in a 24′ Motor home. It is challenging for sure. I probably could make a living making down comforters out of all the hair he sheds each year. lol 🙂

  4. Hi Mike, We found a great 12volt vacuum cleaner on Amazon that does the job. Hailey sheds quite a bit, plus we have all the sand to deal with too..it’s a Black and Decker Auto Pivot Vac. Great suction and it’s got a long 16ft cord . Comes in it’s own carrying case and also does a great job on the window shades !

I am sorry it is made by Casabella…..Magnet Broom…../*

I use a sponge broom, it is about 10″x1″ with a regular broom handle which could be shortened a little. this sponge just scoots off the hair so easily. I have had it for a long time so I couldn’t tell you where you could find it now but Google knows all,LOL. It is called “The Magnet Broom”. /*

  12. A roll of the foamy, rubbery shelf liner that prevents things from sliding around on RV shelves works wonders for wiping dog hair from upholstery.

  13. I have a great experience in using Dyson vacuum cleaner, it works great on sucking up the pet hair.

I share the E-trek with a golden retriever named Dyson who tends to sleep on the cockpit carpet. In spite of the name Dyson (he follows past canine pals Hoover and Kirby) I bought a corded Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld Vacuum from Amazon ($25) and it works quite well. It’s basically a soft rubber end piece that functions much like the side of a flip-flop, but with a fairly powerful vacuum attached to it. Next dog could be named Bissell!

I found out serendipitously that you can use the side of the rubber sole on a flip-flop as a scraper – gets up most of the pet hair.

We travel with our collie who sheds all the time. We also use the sticky roller on small throw rugs and pillows on the couch. We also have leather. A great sweeper is the Shark electric bagless it is upright and small also great for sand cleanup when at the beach. Love reading your suggestions and blogs. However we do have a motorhome.

  17. We have also had problems with the Dustbuster. Glad it wasn’t just us. I took it back and got a refund. We also use a damp rag to pick up dog hair. It seems to work quite well!
